about

This album is dedicated to all the great people we have worked with over the lifespan of Mobilicity. From the original ladies at Head Office, Penny, Tracy, and Liana, to the current ladies, Stephanie and Jen, from our peers in St. Catharines, to our good friends in the wonderful country of Nicaragua.

The five odd years were a lot of things but mainly it involved some pretty fucking fantastic people. Things start, things end, and the cool things are remembered. Here’s to remembering.

Melody Motel is-

Bobby Cross- Piano and backing vocals (Lead vocals on Post Card)

Darren Clarke- Lead Vocals

Jason Newton- Guitar and backing vocals

All songs written by Melody Motel except Montebello Park, written by Melody Motel and Ken Brennan (a.k.a. The Jesse Seguin Anxiety), Justin Drummond appears on, “Alfonso and Idollym.”

released November 13, 2016

Isla de Ometepe- I have this postcard on my desk, it has been there forever, Isla de Ometepe, given to me by Celeste when I was in Nicaragua. The back of the card reads, “Darren, I know by the fact that you really like pictures, this one was taken by one of the professional photographers we have down here. Hope it brings you some good memories of my beloved Nicaragua. The Flur de Cona is for you, enjoy it! As the 3 cigars I bought for all the smokers in CD haha! Greetings Darren, Celeste” (sic)

Sunny Side Up- This is my ode to Merritton. If you’ve never gone for breakfast at the Lancer on Hartzel Road you should. I’ll dedicate this song to all my friends from Merritton- good people, good times.

All Our Houses- McMillan Park in Thorold, baseball tryouts, blue skies and shagging flies… sometimes that’s what I miss most, just shagging fly balls… and yeah, dinner at Mom’s with my sisters… having a tea in the very best company.

We Build Castles- Ontario Street, St. Catharines, right by Gaston’s Auto Sales, is the Lazy Lizard owned by Anthony Falovo known in certain circles as, “Choves.” I’ve known Anthony since I was like four and he
was two, I actually skipped kindergarten to hang out with him one time (I got busted by my dad though as he had come home from work at the factory for a break, he asked me what I was doing home, I hesitated then responded, “I came home to get some raisins…”)… here’s the thing that needs to be cleared up because nobody, Anthony included, remembers this- It’s not Choves it is Chobes. It started when we were riding bikes around the neighborhood in Thorold, we were super young and he kept referring to his Uncle as his Aunt (that’s how old we were) so I started calling him, “Anchovies.” (like Aunt-chovies). This got shortened over time- Anchovies, to Chovies, to Choves, to Chobes. I still have a couple Chobe-isms in my vernacular- Indianapolis=Rockanapolis, Rangers=Strangers.

If You Run Out- You can tell a song that was originally written by me on guitar by this- It has three chords or less. Jason of course took my rudimentary tune and made it something with a little bit of noodling sprawl to take a nice stroll in. So, hey, take a stroll.

Je Pense- I’m going to dedicate this song to Rachel Cassise. Nobody could simultaneously smoke a joint, hold her tiny dog, adjust the car radio, yell at other cars, honk the horn, and drive like a complete mad man quite like Rachel… and yeah, the tangerine light in her blue eyes… great eyes, like Grade Eight Encyclopedia Ocean blue, with slivers of pristine white- unmelted ice…

Whole World Slows Down- Steve Del Duca and his zip lock bag full of Cheerios. Tyler Deane advocating the wonder of, “Even in the Quietest Moments,” JD and laundrymat selfies, Heater with a canoe, my boy Jay Curvin and the gas bar comic books, Chantelle Spicer and her brilliant art. Oh yeah, and Jim and Ripley- good people.

Sharkskin Nights in Buffalo- Buffalo, I love Buffalo. Take a drive through Buffalo at dusk. Beautiful. Great David Lee Roth quote, “Buffalo is the glove box of America.”

Pony Express- You ever been to Vermont? On my way back from Nova Scotia this year, my last day driving back, I started in Montpelier and drove through Vermont, New York, and finally home. I woke up that day originally thinking I would look to just drive home as quickly as possible and not stop to take pictures but it was way too beautiful- perfect late June, window down, no A/C required kind of weather and the landscape was stunning. The roads wound up and down and all around, the music sounded great, and I would simply pull over if there was someone behind me who appeared to be in a rush. Why rush?

Montebello Park- Ken Brennan conceives of things in a wonderfully original way and is never afraid to colour outside the lines. We miss his poetry.

Every Cat with a String- I tried redoing the vocals on this one and I changed some of the lyrics, mainly I wanted to change, “and don’t apologize,” to, “maybe apologize.” But the original had a certain something. It was Stu Christie who cautioned me about apologizing too much in life. Good advice.

Postcard- From Bobby: This song is all about the nostalgia. I hate the fact that I am too young to have enjoyed Crystal Beach Amusement Park. The first 5 years of my life we lived about a 5 minute walk from the park. I was born the year it closed (I would have been 4 months old at the time). My parents tell me that they took me there before it closed on Labour Day. It's so unique that all of my memories of this place are through other people. For example, my father grew up about a block away from the park. He says that almost every night he could hear Laughing Sal from his bedroom window and could constantly smell the sugar waffles. Whenever I want to have a quick escape from reality I close my eyes and picture myself on a warm summer night walking through the park. The neon signs from the Magic Palace and the Laff in the Dark guiding my way. Hearing the waves slapping the breakwall and the people screaming as the Comet nears its first drop. My vision always ends with Laughing Sal, just like my father would hear as he slipped into his dreams. This one's for you, Crystal Beach.

Time’s Not Mine- We, drank all the beer, before you got here.

Alfonso and Idollym- Dedicated specifically to our friend Alfonso Campos and his wife Idollym. We’d like to further dedicate this to all the wonderful people we’ve interacted with from Managua, to name just a few- Carlos Silva, Aristedes Laguna, Vanessa Corea Mendoza, Elmer Bervis, Greg Hodgson, Maria “Pia” Miranda, Luis Betanco, Jenny Herrera, Carlos Rodriguez, and Abeddys Montalvan.

Thank you to- Our Self Proclaimed, Part-Time, MVP, Justin “Routine” Drummond, Tim Harris, Tom Newburgh, our significant others- Ashleigh, Caroline, and Erin, our Friends in Mobilicity- Jacquie Lenson, the original three- Liana McCabe, Tracy MacLean, Penny Horton, as well as Stephanie Diakow and Jennifer Brazao, Fabrice Luma, Kyle Simmons, Alexander Alexandrov, Liri Aliu, Stephanie Cooper, Manisha Nayyar, Sandra Wilkinson, Sandi Demontbrun, Jacquie Bonham, EK, Alan Kay, Dany Okito, (Doctor) Ken Brennan, Michelle Saulnier, Andrew Butterworth, Kevin Galway, Steve Jasinski, Brian Coon, Sherri Wynne, Doug Joy, Erin Pollington, Stephanie Devenyi, Jesse Seguin, Scott Savage, Laura-Lee “Remote Control” Boswell, Sarah Kiss, Jon Ritz, Julie Charlebois, Jackie Weaver, Amanda Patterson, Tom Atkinson, Niki Loos, Steve Del Duca, Mark Eaton, June Phillips-Spinks, Bobby “D” Davis, Craig McCaul, Nikki Tibbs, Jimmy “The Man” Rivera, Camilo Palomino-ulloa, Melissa Zimmer, Katie Walters, Geoff Quigley, Kristen Fleming, Chris Somerfield, Koryna Delduca, Erin Kirby, Billy Taylor, Vince Tremblay.

An Official, “Giddyup,” to Tom Jackson.
